Canada is populated by around 35 million people. This number includes great diversity in terms of origin and ethnicity. With Canada continuing to welcome migrants into their country the range of people continues to broaden.

Before colonization the country was the home to many indigenous peoples. These included the first nations and the Inuits. The Metis evolved after the European settlers arrived and were created from the breeding between the Europeans and the First Nations .The Inuit people are those who are found close to the Arctic Circle, in the colder regions of the country. The First Nations contain around 634 different bands and have held a long history in Canada. There are recorded trade routes in the region dating back to 1000 years BC. When the Europeans first settled there were estimates of up to 2 million indigenous people living in the region but as soon as the Europeans arrive numbers started to dwindle dramatically. The loss of up to 80% of its population has been attributed to mainly to the diseases that were transferred across from Europe. Although there were some lives lost as a result of conflicts over the fur trades, there were not as many conflicts as those that were occurring further south in the United States.

The battle for control of the country between the French and the British has left a country divided with some areas such as those around the province of Quebec speaking French and the rest of the nation having English as their dominant language.  The majority of Canadians hail from the United Kingdom and Western Europe. Currently there are only 1.5 million indigenous people who dwell in the country and although migration is still encouraged the country remains sparsely populated.

Between 2011 and 2015 migration has been welcomed and has averaged 259,000 per year. However, in 2017 the number has risen to 300,000 and there have been some estimates that have stated that 450,000 per year are needed. This has been as a result of a number of factors but the main reasons are economic one.Canada needs more skilled laborers as the there are many problems in relation to having an ageing population. With low birth rates also being a concern, the country needs people to come in and work in order to support the pension schemes and the expensive social welfare systems, that the country has adopted.Canada needs more skilled laborers as the there are many problems in relation to having an ageing population. The tighter immigration controls that President Donald Trump has introduced in the United States has rebounded on Canada as more illegal migrants have been entering the nation. This has led to great concern from Canadians that people are starting to take advantage of the country’s liberal attitudes towards migration.

The future will be a challenge to how the government manages to stream the migrants that they need to welcome into the country, away from those who may be a danger operating from within Canada’s borders. Most ethnicity is found in the three main cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. These visible minority groups contain mainly Blacks Chinese and South Asians, However the recent conflicts in areas surrounding Syria has seen more refugees settling from this part of the world. Canada is a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures. Currently over 20% of its population are foreign born and the country as a whole generally welcomes new people coming into the region. It is part of the country’s character to celebrate the diversity of its population and if the country is to continue to thrive it will need more people to migrate in to help the continuing building of the nation.
